Informal translation from Hebrew of the Av 7, 5774, (11 August 2024) statement:
Sanhedrin - The Great Court of 71
Secretary: Rabbi Amnon Hever Tel: 054-9400909 b.d.hartzion@gmail.com
We call upon all Jews to assemble and stand together in defense of their souls against the danger of a multi-front war.
1.Since Simchat Torah 5784 (October 2023), the People of Israel have been in distress and adversity. Vast areas in the north and south have been emptied of their residents, and our enemies from all directions threaten to destroy us.
2.According to the Torah, disasters of this magnitude befall the People of Israel only as a result of their transgressions. Concerning those who ignore their sins and seek only natural and coincidental explanations, the Torah states: “If despite these things you do not accept My discipline but continue to be hostile toward Me...” (Leviticus 26), and Maimonides explains: “This is a cruel approach, causing them to cling to their evil deeds, leading to additional calamities.” (Mishneh Torah, Laws of Fasts 1).
3.Therefore, the weekly court of the Sanhedrin has decreed the establishment of a Spiritual Inquiry Committee. This committee will investigate and clarify the sins that brought about this calamity and determine what must be done to rectify them. This effort will parallel the physical inquiry committees investigating the failures of the army and the government.
4.We hereby call upon scholars from all sectors to appear before the committee and express their opinions: “Why has the Lord done this to this land? What kindled this great wrath?” Come and testify before the committee and share your thoughts for the sake of Heaven!
5.Anyone interested in appearing before the committee is requested to schedule a time via the Sanhedrin’s email: thesanhedrin@googlegroups.com
6.The committee will collect all the various opinions and strive to develop guiding principles for repentance for the People of Israel and the State of Israel.
7.“All the prophets commanded repentance, and Israel will only be redeemed through repentance. The Torah has already promised that, in the end, Israel will repent...”
